Introduction
Hello and welcome to my website! Here, you are able to immerse yourself into the middle ages and emerge with a deeper understanding of the history of the world of medicine.
The development of this website was an extensive, enjoyable process. It all started when I chose a theme for this website. My mother works in the medical field and my father is a teacher, and I have always been interested in medical history, so I thought that learning about this topic would be a perfect opportunity for me to teach others about something I am passionate about- History! Medieval medicine was so intriguing to me because despite it being many years in the past, it has had such a direct impact on present medicine and is strikingly similar to current medical practices. Although the means by which medicine was used differs, the general idea behind each of their techniques and ideas is virtually the same. Through this project, I have learned the importance of reliable sources. While looking for artifacts, I often had to start by looking as “unreliable” sources for manuscripts or photographs of tools. Once I found the images I wanted to add to my website, the hunt began. Often, these websites would have limited information, so finding where the artifact currently resides was usually the first step. Once I uncovered this, the rest of the information usually quickly followed. While making this website, I was turned into a true historian; searching for specific artifacts, finding their corresponding information and uncovering the truth. I believe that the most important thing that I learned in the development of this website was the story that followed each artifact. While putting together the website, a story unfolded with each object telling a different piece of one story that came together in the end. The artifacts each represent a different time and place during the middle ages, so together, they fit together like a puzzle and show not only the medical medieval history, but history in general of the middle ages.
Medieval medicine provides a deeper look into the middle ages by reflecting the various changes and events that shook the medieval world. Medicine revolutionized the world by providing new ideas and theories to heal the body form disease and warfare. This also provided new ways to view the body and the rise of beliefs about the importance of the body and taking care of one’s body. Medicine has evolved overtime into the impressive remedies, machines, and technology we have today, but after examining the artifacts and reading about them, you will discover how advanced and innovative the medieval world of medicine was. Here, you enter the Middle Ages to explore the medical world; disease and plagues that engulfed day-to-day life, tools that were once the epitome of modern medicine, and different forms of medicine and remedies that were used to treat illness. Through the lens of medieval medicine, you can explore life in the middle ages, political and social changes that were reflected in the medical world, and the evolution of learning and schooling.
